Vietnam Travel Information

Vietnam Flag Vietnam (the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) is a country in southeastern Asia. It has land borders with Cambodia, Laos, and the People's Republic of China.

As of 2009, Vietnam had a population of 85,789,573. The capital city, Hanoi, has a population of about 6.5 million. The country's largest city is however Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon, and still commonly referred to by that name), which has a population of about 7.1 million.

Vietnam was only unified only in 1976, after a long struggle for independence, and even longer war between the Communist North, and the non-Communist South (the Communists eventually achieved victory in 1975). For the first years after unification, the economy was based around a centrally planned economy, but beginning from 1986, market-orientated reforms were gradually introduced (although the government remains a one party Communist state). Rapid economic growth followed in the 1990s and 2000s, although the country remains a relatively poor country.
