Puerto Rico Travel Information
Puerto Rico is an island archipeligo located
in the northeast Caribbean Sea.
Although self-governing, and styled as
a Commonwealth in free association with the United States,
it is technically unincorporated organized territory of the
United States.
The US acquired the islands from Spain in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American War (when the islands were invaded and occupied) and the subsequent Treaty of Paris. The capital and largest city of Puerto Rico is San Juan. Additionally, there are many other towns and cities in the islands including Aguadilla, Añasco, Arecibo, Bayamon, Caguas, Carolina, Fajardo, Guanica, Guayama, Guayanilla, Isabela, Mayagüez, Ponce and Vieques. Around about 5 million tourists, most of whom are from the US visit Puerto Rico each year. This includes a large number, perhaps as many as a third, who are cruise ship passengers. Visitors to Puerto Rico will of course want to enjoy the islands' beautiful beaches, but there is also much more to see besides. One particular attraction to look out for is Cruceta El Vigia in Ponce, which is a 100 feet (30 meter) tall cross, containing a 10-storey vertical tower and a horizontal "sky bridge". From this "sky bridge", you can some truly spectacular views of the surrounding area.
