Romania Travel Information

Romania is a country located in eastern Europe. It is located on the western shore of the Black Sea, and shares land borders with Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine.

As of 2009, the population of Romania was an estimated 22,215,421. The capital and largest city, Bucharest is home to about 2 million, and there are around another 25 cities and towns with populations in excess of 100,000 people (although none approaches Bucharest in size).

Romania is an upper-middle income country, and has been part of the European Union since 2007. Prior to the global recession, it was experiencing rapid economic growth, and was even sometimes been referred to as a "Tiger". In 2009 however, the recession hit the country and the GDP contracted significantly. At present, Romania continues to use its own currency, the Leu, but hopes to adopt the euro within the next few years.
