Japan Travel Information

Japan Flag Japan (Japanese: Nihon, Nippon; Officially Nihon-koku, Nippon-koku) is an island nation located in eastern Asia in the Pacific Ocean, to the East of China, Korea, and Russia. There are four main islands (Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku) that make up most of the territory of the country, but there are thousands of smaller islands incorporated within Japanese territory as well.

Currently Japan has a population of about 127.4 million. However, Japan's population is aging and expected to decline in future - the result of a post-war baby boom followed by a subsequent decline in birth rates.

Japan's population is generally highly urbanized, and the country contains the most populous metropolitan area in the world - the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area. This region has a total population of about 35 million, and includes Tokyo, which is Japan's capital city, as well as many smaller cities. Apart from Tokyo, other important cities in Japan include Aichi, Fukuoka, Kanagawa, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Miyagi, Osaka, and Saitama.

Japan has a successful capitalist economy organised on free market principles. The economy is either the 2nd largest (after the United States of America) or 3rd largest (after the United States of America and the People's Republic of China) depending on how the figures are calculated. Japan's industries include chemicals, electronics, industrial equipment, machine tools, motor vehicles, nonferrous metals processed foods, steel, and transportation equipment.
