Thailand Travel Information
The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia.
It has borders with Cambodia,
Laos,
Malaysia,
and Myanmar (Burma),
as well as having coastlines on the Gulf of Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand.
As of 2006,
Thailand had an estimated population of 62,828,706.
The capital and largest city in the country is as of
Bangkok (Thai: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, or Krung Thep),
which had a population of 5,705,061 as of
2007.
Although Bangkok is by far the largest city in the country, there also
ten other cities with populations of over 100,000.
Thailand is a newly industrialized country, and
between
1985 and
1995
had the world's highest growth rate, averaging nearly 9% per year GDP growth.
However, the Thai currency, the baht, came under pressure in
1997
(eventually triggering a wider Asian financial crisis),
causing the currency to be substantially devalued and Thai economy to
shrink by more than 10% in that single year.
However the Thai economy did subsequently recover, in part due to
a recovery program called "Thaksinomics"
(named after Thaksin Shinawatra who was Prime Minister from
2001
to
2006).
