Israel Travel Information

Israel Flag Israel is a country in southwestern Asia. Israel shares land borders with Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as having borders with the partly Palestinian-administered West Bank and Gaza. The country has two coasts:
  • A short coast on the Gulf of Aqaba (an arm of the Red Sea) near the city of Eilat.

  • A longer coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.
As of 2007, Israel had a total popultion of about 7.15 million people, including about 185,000 Jews living in East Jerusalem (which most countries do not recognize as part of Israel). Israeli law states that Jerusalem is the capital, but many countries and the United Nations do not recognize it as such (the USA does however, although the US embassy remains in Tel Aviv). The total population of Jerusalem was estimated to be 732,100 as of 2007. After Jerusalem, the second largest city in the country is Tel Aviv-Jaffa with a population of 384,600 (as of 2006), with as many as 3.1 million living in the Tel-Aviv metropolitan area.

Israel is the world's only Jewish State, and although most (just over three quarters) of the population is Jewish, there are also people of other religions who live within the country, and who are citizens of Israel, including Muslims, Christians and Druze. The country, especially Jerusalem, is of course known for the number of religious sites it contains, and visitors to Israel will find religious sites that are important to Jews, Muslims, Christians, and followers of the Baha'i faith.

Israel has an advanced economy with high GDP per capita and a free market orientation. Important industries include military equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and software. In terms of agriculture, the country is almost self-sufficient in food (although it does import beef and grains), and exports fruit and vegetables. Tourism, including religious tourism, is also an important sector of the economy, but security problems have deterred an increasing number of tourists from visiting the country.

From the Book: Street Food in Tel Aviv
The food stands in Tel Aviv serve some of the best falafel.
Street stalls in Tel Aviv are the best places to try authentic vegetarian delights. Falafel is widely considered to be the unofficial national dish of Israel. Sabich (a pita stuffed with fried eggplant, egg, and pickled cabbage) is originally an Iraqi dish but is fast becoming a local favorite. You'll find that in general, the street food is of good quality and is often kosher, too.

Where to Eat:
Along Ibn Gvirol Street, you can find dozens of food stands that serve falafel and shawarmas. Head to Frishman Street or the neighboring town of Ramat Gan for the best sabich. Although it's not technically a food stall, the street-side Abulafia Arab bakery in the port area of Jaffa doles out freshly baked savory pastries and pitas late at night.

How Much:
Six falafel balls in a pita (with as many dips and salad that can fit) costs about 15 Israeli new sheqel ($3.85). A chicken shawarma is about 30 Israeli new sheqel ($7.70).
