Israel Travel Information

Israel Flag Israel is a country in southwestern Asia. Israel shares land borders with Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as having borders with the partly Palestinian-administered West Bank and Gaza. The country has two coasts:
  • A short coast on the Gulf of Aqaba (an arm of the Red Sea) near the city of Eilat.

  • A longer coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.
As of 2007, Israel had a total popultion of about 7.15 million people, including about 185,000 Jews living in East Jerusalem (which most countries do not recognize as part of Israel). Israeli law states that Jerusalem is the capital, but many countries and the United Nations do not recognize it as such (the USA does however, although the US embassy remains in Tel Aviv). The total population of Jerusalem was estimated to be 732,100 as of 2007. After Jerusalem, the second largest city in the country is Tel Aviv-Jaffa with a population of 384,600 (as of 2006), with as many as 3.1 million living in the Tel-Aviv metropolitan area.

Israel is the world's only Jewish State, and although most (just over three quarters) of the population is Jewish, there are also people of other religions who live within the country, and who are citizens of Israel, including Muslims, Christians and Druze. The country, especially Jerusalem, is of course known for the number of religious sites it contains, and visitors to Israel will find religious sites that are important to Jews, Muslims, Christians, and followers of the Baha'i faith.

Israel has an advanced economy with high GDP per capita and a free market orientation. Important industries include military equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and software. In terms of agriculture, the country is almost self-sufficient in food (although it does import beef and grains), and exports fruit and vegetables. Tourism, including religious tourism, is also an important sector of the economy, but security problems have deterred an increasing number of tourists from visiting the country.

This guide tells how to make it a spiritual experience. The plane tickets to Israel are bought, the itinerary is planned, and the suitcases are finally packed....Journeys take preparation; but being ready is one thing-being spiritually prepared is another. Now, in time for the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel, here's a Jewish spiritual travel guide to Israel. It combines, in quick reference format, ancient blessings, medieval prayers, biblical references, and modern poetry, to help today's pilgrim tap into the deep spiritual meaning of the ancient-and modern-sites of the Holy Land. For each of 25 major tourist destinations (from the Western Wall to Masada to a kibbutz in the Galilee), arranged by geographic regions, it gives guidance in sharply-focused three-step sections:* Anticipation: To read in advance. Facts to help orient you in the site's historical context.* Approach: To read on the way there. Readings from varied sources to orient you in the site's spiritual context.* Acknowledgment: To read at the site. A prayer or blessing to integrate the experience into your spiritual consciousness, as well as a journaling space for writing your thoughts and reactions. The only travel book that helps readers to prepare spiritually for the occasion, Israel-A Spiritual Travel Guide is more than a guidebook: It is a spiritual map.
