Northern Mariana Islands Travel Information

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is a group of islands located in the Western Pacific that are organized as a commonwealth in political union with the United States of America. Most US Federal law (but not minimum wage or Federal immigration law) applies within commonwealth, however the commonwealth is outside the customs territory of the United States. The capital of the islands is Saipan.

The islands were a colony of Spain from the 16th century until 1898, when Spain sold the islands to Germany following the Spanish-American War. Japan then occupied the islands during World War I, and obtained a League of Nations mandate over them in 1919. The USA then occupied the islands in 1944. After World War II, the islands continued to be administrated by the United States as part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands until the 1970s, at which point the islanders decided to forge closer links with the United States (rather than seek independence) and transition began towards territorial status.
