Singapore Travel Information

Singapore Flag The Republic of Singapore is a city state located in Southeast Asia on an island at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula. It is a world leading financial center, as well as being one of the world's busiest ports.

Singapore is very densely populated, in fact it is the second most densely populated country after Monaco. As of 2009, Singapore had a population of 4,987,600. About 3.7 million of the city state's inhabitants are Singaporean citizens or permanent residents, and the rest, about 1.3 million are foreigners. The government of Singapore has specifically encouraged foreigners to immigrate to Singapore, not only for business reasons, but because very low birth rates (below replacement levels) mean that otherwise the population would be in decline.

The primary official language in Singapore is English, but Malay, Mandarain Chinese, and Tamil are also all official recognized. There are two main forms of English spoken in Singapore: Standard Singapore English ("SSE"), and Singapore Colloquial English ("Singlish"). Standard Singapore English derives from British English (Singapore was a British colony for 146 years) but contains local English, and is the primary language for formal and professional communications. Singlish is an English-based creole language containing many loan words taken from other languages, and although used in some local media such as TV and movies, is widely considered to be of low prestige, and its use has been discouraged by the Singaporean government.

From the Book: Street Food in Singapore
Food stands at Newton Circus Hawker Centre in Singapore.
Like pretty much everything else in Singapore, the street food is clean and served in an orderly fashion. The main difference is that you won't necessarily find it on the street. Instead, you're more likely to eat delicious morsels of Malay, Indian, and Chinese cuisine in government-regulated food malls and markets, which are often inside apartment buildings, office towers, and shopping centers. Despite the geographic technicality, the food is definitely "street" in style. Bonus: You won't have to worry as much about an upset stomach ruining the rest of your trip.

Where to Eat:
The hundred or so stalls at the Chinatown Food Centre; satays and seafood at Newton Circus Hawker Centre; the Hill Street Food Centre for great fried rice noodles; the Muslim market at Geylang Serai; Ellenborough Market for Teochew Chinese food; the old hawker center in Maxwell Road; the Chomp Chomp Food Centre; the Lau Pa Sat Food Centre; and the People's Park Market. Visit the Makansutra blog for updates on the latest eateries.

How Much:
You can eat well, including generous portions of noodles and satays, for less than $10 Singapore dollars ($7) per person.
