Finland Travel Information

Finland Flag Finland is a country in northern Europe, bordering Norway, Russia, and Sweden. Finland has coastlines on the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland, both of which are arms of the Baltic Sea. Finnish also includes the Åland Islands, which lie at the entrance to the Gulf Of Bothnia.

More than three quarters of Finnish territory is covered with coniferous forests and fens, and the country is particularly known for the very large number (many tens of thousands) of lakes and islands it contains. The landscape of Finland is generally flat, although there are some hilly areas in the extreme northern regions of Lapland which border Norway.

As of 2010, the population of Finland was estimated to be 5,359,538. The capital and largest city of the country is Helsinki, with nearly 600,000 people living in the city, and over 1.3 million living in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Other important towns and cities include Espoo, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Kotka, Lahti, Oulu, Pori, Tampere, Turku, and Vantaa.

The Finnish economy is a highly industrialized free-market economy. Approximately two thirds of GDP comes from services, and just under one third from refining and manufacturing. Primary production, including agriculture, fishing, forestry, and mining, is a comparatively tiny sector of the economy. Finland is a member of the European Union, and has been a member of the eurozone (using the euro currency) since 2002.
