Germany Travel Information
The Federal Republic of Germany
(German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is a country in central
and western Europe. It has land borders with
Austria,
Belgium,
the Czech Republic,
Denmark,
Luxembourg,
the Netherlands,
Poland.
and
Switzerland,
The country has coasts on the North Sea, and on the Baltic Sea.
Germany is currently the most populous country in the European Union:
As of 2006,
the population of Germany was estimated to be 82,314,900.
The capital and largest city of the country is Berlin, which has a population of nearly
3.4 million. Additionally, the cities of Hamburg and Munich (München) also have populations
in excess of one million, and there are more than 80 cities in the country with populations over
100,000.
The German economy is the largest in Europe, and the third largest in the world
(after the USA and Japan). The economy
is highly industrialized, and is internationally known for its manufactured
products such as automobiles, machine tools, and chemicals. Generally speaking
the economy is capitalist and market-orientated, although the German government
does tend intervene in certain sectors of the economy.
