Hungary Travel Information

Hungary Flag The Republic of Hungary is a landlocked country in central Europe. it shares land borders with Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

As of 2009, the population of Hungary was estimated at 10,020,000, a slight decline from the 2001 census. The capital, and by far, the largest city in the country, is Budapest, which is home to more than 1.7 million people (more than 2.5 million people live in the Budapest metropolitan area). Apart from Budapest, there are three other cities with populaties over 100,000 - Debrecen, Miskolc, and Szeged - as well as many smaller towns and cities.

The Hungarian economy has since 1990, made a successful transition from a centrally planned communist economy, to a modern market economy. As a result of years of economic growth, the country is now considered a high income economy, although the global financial cris did hit the country hard from 2008 onwards.

Hungary is a popular tourist destination. People visit the country attracted by its culture and history, especially that found in Budapest, but also by the country's main spas, and Lake Balaton, the largest lake in central Europe.

Product Description:
  • Budapest, awakened in 1989 after its long slumber behind the Iron Curtain, is now one of Europe's hottest destinations. It stands proudly at the center of Eastern Europe's cultural rebirth, and best of all, it still ranks as one of the continent's best bargains.
  • Frommer's Budapest & the Best of Hungary is meticulously updated and revamped every 2 years (more frequently than the competition).
  • Our author, a longtime resident of Budapest, is a professor of Education and co-owner of a B&B on the Pest side of the city--and he loves nothing more than to chat up his guests and give them recommendations for their trip. In this guide, he collects all of his insider tips and points you to the attractions, hotels, and restaurants to suit your tastes and budget, as if you were one of his guests.
  • Explore the city's highlights on detailed walking tours and learn about the gorgeous architecture of both the city's famous buildings and hidden treasures. And of course, we've got all the details on Budapest's exciting nightlife (and hidden parties), its vibrant arts scene, and its fabulous thermal baths and spas.
  • Frommer's Budapest & the Best of Hungary  also covers the Danube Bend, the Lake Balaton Region, Tokaji and the caves of Northeastern Hungary, and Pécs and the Mecsek Hills of Southern Hungary.

Product Description:

With increasing airline coverage of Budapest, keen foreign interest in the local property market, a weak currency, and significant recent investment in hotels and other visitor facilities, Hungary’s tourist industry is booming. The first edition of Bradt’s Hungary won the Best Guide Book Award from the British Guild of Travel Writers; this thoroughly updated second edition further strengthens the guide, offering expanded coverage of Lake Balaton (which now has its own airport and is a popular resort destination), new walking trails in the countryside, details of the best thermal baths, information on dental and medical tourism, and much more.
