Dominica Travel Information
Dominica (French: Dominique) is an island country in the Caribbean Sea.
It is sometimes called the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean", on account
of its natural beauty and unspoiled nature.
As of 2009, Dominica had an estimated dpopulation of 72,660. The capital and largest town on the island is Roseau, which in the 2007 census had 14,847 inhabitants. Bananas is the principal crop in Dominica, and banana production remains the backbone of the island's economy. However, bananas are highly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, and the European Union is phasing-out preferred access to its market, so the country is making a conscious effort to diversify its agriculture. Additionally, Dominica has also entered the offshore financial services market. Tourism is not as important in Dominica as in many other Caribbean islands. One of the main reasons for this is the island is mainly volcanic and has relatively few beaches. However, there are attractions in the islands, and cruise ship visits and eco-tourism are both increasing.
