The Republic of Austria (German:
Republik Österreich) is a landlocked country located in central Europe.
The country's neighbours are
the
Czech Republic,
Germany,
Hungary,
Italy,
Liechstein,
Slovakia,
Slovenia, and
Switzerland.
Austria is largely located in the Alps (the Central Eastern Alps, the Northern Limestone Alps and the Southern Limestone Alps are all partly in Austria), and partially part of a second mountaineous area known as the as the Austrian granite plateau. For these two reasons, the country's terrain is largely mountaineous: Only about one third of the Austrian territory lies below 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea-level, and only about a quarter of the land could be considered low-lying. The principal river in Austria is the Danube (German: Donau), and two of the countries major cities, Vienna and Linz, are located on this river. About 8.3 million people (estimated as of October 2006) live in Austria. Around 1.6 million of these people live in the country's capital city, Vienna, with about another 0.6 million people living in the suburbs of Vienna. Vienna is not just the capital, it is also the largest city of the country, in fact the only city in Austria with a population of over 1 million - all other cities in Austria such as Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck, are considerably smaller.

Austria joined the European Union in 1995, and has also adopted the euro for its currency. Today, Austria has one of the highest GDPs per capital of the EU. As a vacation destination, Austria is principally popular for ski vacations, but many people forget that there is much else to see in the country. Austria is a beautiful country, and has many sites of cultural and historic interest, especially in the capital, Vienna.
