Tanzania Travel Information
The United Republic of Tanzania
(Swahili: Dowladda federaalka kumeelgaarka)
is a country in East Africa.
It was formed in
1964
by the union of Tanganyika (the parts of the country on the African mainland)
with the islands of Zanzibar (an archipelago in the Indian Ocean which
lies between 16 and 31 miles (25 to 50 kilometers) off the coast of the mainland).
Tanzania shares land borders with
Burundi,
the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Kenya,
Malawi,
Mozambique,
Rwanda,
Uganda, and
Zambia,
as well as having a coastline on the Indian Ocean.
Additionally, Tanzania is one of three countries
(along with
Kenya and
Uganda)
that has a shoreline on, and shares Lake Victoria.
As of 2009,
the population of Tanzania was estimated as being
43,739,000.
The capital of Tanzania since
1974,
has been Dodoma, which in the
2002
census had a population of 324,347. However,
Tanzania's largest city, principal center of commercial activity,
and home of many government offices, remains the former capital,
Dar es Salaam, which in the
2002
census had a population of 2,497,940.
