Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan de Cunha Travel Information

Saint Helena Flag Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan de Cunha is a British Overseas Territory consisting of Saint Helena, Ascension Island, and the Tristan de Cunha island group. All the islands are located in the South Atlantic and volcanic in origin, although widely separated in distance from each other.
  • Saint Helena, is best known as being used as a place of exile used by the British government. Among others, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (king of the Zulu nation) were confined there for many years. Saint Helena is also known for being one of, perhaps the most, loyal of territories to the British crown, despite only having been visited once by a reigning British monarch (King George VI in 1947). As of the 2008 census, the population of Saint Helena was 4,255, and the capital, Jamestown, had a population of 714.

  • Ascension Island is home to Wideawake Airfield, a joint US-British facility, which was most famously used for the Operation Black Buck Vulcan bomber raids during the Falklands War. It also contains one of the five ground antennas that help in operating the Global Positioning System (GPS). Since the island has no indigenous or permanent population, the entire population of the island consists of British and American military personal and civilian contractors, as well as local contract staff hired from Saint Helena. The population of Ascension Island is typically about 940, and the capital of the islands is Georgetown.

  • Tristan da Cunha is a remote group of islands, in fact, the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. There are six islands in the group, the main island, Tristan da Cunha, the three Nightingale Islands (Nightingale Island, Middle Island, and Stoltenhoff Island) which are all uninhabited, as well as Inaccessible Island and Gough Island, which are both wildlife reserves (Gough Island contains a weather station, usually occupied by 6 people). As of the 2009, the total population of the entire Tristan da Cunha group was 275. The capital of Tristan da Cunha is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, which got its name as a result by the visit of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (second son of Queen Victoria) to the island in 1867. However, perhaps because of it is a bit of mouthful, the town is known locally as simply "The Settlement".
As of the 2008 census, the total population of the entire territory was 5,661. The capital of Saint Helena, serves also a capital for the territory as a whole.

Product Description:
The world’s interest in tiny Ascension Island, some 5,000 miles downrange from Cape Canaveral, Florida, began when the Lords of the Admiralty established a garrison on the island to thwart any attempts to rescue Napoleon from the island’s closest neighbor, St Helena. One giant leap occurred 151 years later, when NASA built the Devil’s Ashpit tracking station to support Project Apollo. The Devil’s Ashpit is the story of a young newlywed couple who broke the station’s “singles only” policy to enjoy balmy weather, tremendous fishing, sensational diving, free food and lodging, generous pay, and no taxes on an island with a rich history and a remarkably diverse cast of characters. “Getting away from it all,” however, carries some grave caveats for the average person. After three years on the island, these trailblazers were desperate to leave.
