India Travel Information
The Republic of India is a country located in southern Asia, but
also incorporates a number of islands in the Arabian Sea (the Lakshadweep Islands),
and the Bay of Bengal (the Andaman and Nicobar Islands).
India is bordered by
Bangladesh,
Bhutan,
China,
Myanmar,
Nepal and
Pakistan,
and has coasts on the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay of Bengal.
India has an estimated population of 1.2 billion, making it the second most populous
country in the world (after China). More than 70% of the population
resides in rural areas, but there are at least 35 cities with populations over 1 million,
and three cities (Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai) with populations over 10 million.
Economically is increasingly important, and the economy has grown rapidly since
1991
when the then government introduced a series of market-orientated reforms. The GDP
is predicted to quadruple by 2020, and the Indian GDP is predicted to overtake that
of the United States by 2050. Nevertheless, India remains a developing country,
and contains the world's largest concentration of poor people - around 40% of people survive on
less than US $1.25 per day.
