The Republic of Sudan
is a country in northeastern Africa.
In terms of land area, it is the largest country both in Africa, and
in the Arab world.
Sudan shares borders with
the Central African Republic,
Chad,
the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Ethiopia,
Egypt,
Eritrea,
Kenya,
Uganda,
as well as having a coastline on the Red Sea.
As of 2009, the population of Sudan was estimated as being 42,272,000. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum, which is located at the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile. As of 2005, about 2,207,794 people lived in the urban area, with a total of around 11 million people living in the city's metropolitan area. The largest city of Sudan is Omdurman, which is located on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Khartoum. Omdurman is the principal commercial, cultural and industrial center of the country. As of 2008, Omdurman had a population of 2,395,159.
