The Portuguese Republic (Portuguese: República Portuguesa)
is a country located in the Iberian peninsula in southwestern
Europe. Portugal borders Spain and has
a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, as well as incorporating two
island groups in the Atlantic - the Azores and Madeira.
As of 2007, the estimated population of Portugal was 10,642,836. The capital and largest city of the country, Lisbon, had a population of 564,657. Other important cities in Portugal include Almada, Amadora, Braga, Coimbra, Funchal, Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
