Dominican Republic Travel Information
The Dominican Republic (Spanish: República Dominicana) is the 2nd Caribbean
nation (after Cuba) in terms of both population and land area.
The country is located on the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola, and shares
a land border with Haiti which lies on the western half of the island.
The population of the Dominican Republic is estimated to be just over 10 million
(as of 2009,
about a quarter of whom lived in the metropolitan area of the country's capital and largest city,
Santo Domingo.
The economy of the Dominican Republic is the largest, or the possibly the 2nd largest, of the
Caribbean and central American region. The country is classified as an upper-middle income
developing country, and economic growth has been swift in recent years. Services and tourism in particular
have grown to become an important part of the country, but agriculture and mining remain important.
Remittances from Dominicans living abroad also make a significant contribution to the national economy.

It offers practical advice on what to expect and to how to behave in a Dominican home, or in social and work settings.
