The Republic of the Maldives
is an island country located in the Indian Ocean to the South of
India and to the Southwest of
Sri Lanka.
The Maldives consist of over 1,000 coral islands grouped into 26
atolls.
The islands are known for being low-lying, only just about sea level, with the average height about sea level being just 4 feet 11 inches (1.5 meters), and the maximum being 7 feet 7 inches (2.3 meters). Because of their low elevation, there is of course a concern that rising sea levels could mean that much of the islands may be inundated in future. In 2008, the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, even suggested that the Maldives government was looking into purchasing additional land in Australia, India, or Sri Lanka, because of this concern. As of 2009, the population of the Maldives was estimated as being 849,000.396,334. The country's capital and largest city is Malé which is located on the North Malé Atoll, which is part of an administrative division known as the Kaafu Atoll. As of 2006, the population of Malé was estimated to be 103,693.
