United States Travel Information
Located mainly in the North American continent,
the United States of America (USA) is either the 3rd of 4th largest country in the world
of total land area (after Russia, Canada and
possibly China, depending on how territories disputed between
China and India are counted).
Most of the country's territory lies in a contiguous region known as the
"48 contiguous states" which stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean,
and which is bordered to the North by Canada
and to the South by Mexico.
Other US territory also includes Alaska, which
lies in the Northwest of the North American continent, and is also bordered by Canada,
as well as thee state of Hawaii, which is an island group in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,
plus 14 territorities and insular areas
(including American Samoa,
Northern Mariana Islands,
Puerto Rico and the
US Virgin Islands) which are various islands or island-groups
scattered across the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
As of 2007,
the United States had an estimated population of 302,552,000, including about 12 million
illegal or unauthorized immigrants. Currently the USA is the third most populous country in the
world (after China and India), and further population
growth is expected as a result of the combination of both a relatively high birth rate and
continuing immigrating from
China,
India,
Mexico, and
the Philippines.
Comfortably over four fifths of the US population
lives in one of the country's many metropolitan areas.
There are over two hundred incorporated places with populations over 100,000,
nine cities with populations of over 1 million,
and four cities (Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York) with populations of over 2 million.
The capital of the United States is Washington D.C., which although a relatively small city
with a population of just under 600,000 in the city itself, is surrounded by a large metropolitan
area which is home to about 8 million people in total.

The United States has one of the largest and most successful economies
on the world. Based around capitalist principles and free markets,
the US has the largest national GDP in the world, as well as one of the highest
GDPs per capita (8th highest in nominal terms, and 4th highest in purchasing power parity).
In fact, the US GDP is so large, that it is,
on most measures, slightly larger than the entire combined GDP of all the countries of
the European Union. The US is also the world's largest importer of goods,
and the second largest exporter
