United States Travel Information

USA Flag Located mainly in the North American continent, the United States of America (USA) is either the 3rd of 4th largest country in the world of total land area (after Russia, Canada and possibly China, depending on how territories disputed between China and India are counted). Most of the country's territory lies in a contiguous region known as the "48 contiguous states" which stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and which is bordered to the North by Canada and to the South by Mexico. Other US territory also includes Alaska, which lies in the Northwest of the North American continent, and is also bordered by Canada, as well as thee state of Hawaii, which is an island group in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, plus 14 territorities and insular areas (including American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands) which are various islands or island-groups scattered across the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

As of 2007, the United States had an estimated population of 302,552,000, including about 12 million illegal or unauthorized immigrants. Currently the USA is the third most populous country in the world (after China and India), and further population growth is expected as a result of the combination of both a relatively high birth rate and continuing immigrating from China, India, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Comfortably over four fifths of the US population lives in one of the country's many metropolitan areas. There are over two hundred incorporated places with populations over 100,000, nine cities with populations of over 1 million, and four cities (Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York) with populations of over 2 million. The capital of the United States is Washington D.C., which although a relatively small city with a population of just under 600,000 in the city itself, is surrounded by a large metropolitan area which is home to about 8 million people in total.

The United States has one of the largest and most successful economies on the world. Based around capitalist principles and free markets, the US has the largest national GDP in the world, as well as one of the highest GDPs per capita (8th highest in nominal terms, and 4th highest in purchasing power parity). In fact, the US GDP is so large, that it is, on most measures, slightly larger than the entire combined GDP of all the countries of the European Union. The US is also the world's largest importer of goods, and the second largest exporter

Featuring 375 color photos and 80 full-color detailed maps—more than any other park guidebook—this is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with more than a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic’s century-long association with America’s national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence.

The guide opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, a section on how to use the guide, and a national locator map. The parks are presented alphabetically region by region, with individual maps and geographical profiles. Colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it’s an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife, and more. An Information & Activities page provides practical advice on visiting—park contact information, camping and lodging, accessibility, pet restrictions, things to do, and special advisories. Excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, forests, and other areas of exceptional interest follow many of the park entries.

From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here’s all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks—the crown jewels of the park system—plus invaluable advice from National Geographic writers who know them well.
