Burma Travel Information

Myanmar Flag The Union of Myanmar (usually unofficially known as Burma) is a Southeast Asian country. It is bordered by Bangladesh, India, Laos, the People's Republic of China, and Thailand, and has a long coastline on the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

As of 2009, the country had an estimated population of just over 50 million. About 4.3 million people live in the country's largest city, and former capital, Yangon (Rangoon). The next largest city is Mandalay which has a population of around 1 million. The country's third largest city is the capital (since 2005), and is brand new city, called Naypyidaw, which has a population of nearly 1 million.

Since 1962, when the military took power in a coup and adopted policies known as the "Burmese Way to Socialism", the country has been relative isolated, as well as suffering relative economic decline. Few foreigners visit the country, inward investment is limited, and many countries have placed sanctions or restrictions on trade with the country. The regime begun to encourage tourists to visit the country again since 1992, but only about 750,000 tourists visit Burma annually, and Nobel prize winning opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has requested that tourists not visit the country.

Product Description:
In the past two decades, Burma/Myanmar has become a front-page topic in newspapers across the world. This former British colony has one of the most secretive, corrupt, and repressive regimes on the planet, yet it houses a Nobel Peace Prize winner who is and in and out of house arrest. It has an ancient civilization that is mostly unknown to Westerners, yet it was an important--and legendary--theater in World War II. A picturesque land with mountain jungles and monsoon plains, it is one of the world's largest producers of heroin. It has a restive Buddhist monk population that has captured the attention of the west when it faced off against the regime. And it recently experienced one of the worst natural disasters in modern times, one effect of which was to lay bare the manifold injustices and cruelties of the regime. Burma/Myanmar: What Everyone Needs to Know offers a concise synthesis of this forbidding yet fascinating country. David Steinberg, one of the world's eminent authorities on the region, explains the current situation in detail yet contextualizes it in a wide-ranging survey of Burmese history and culture. Authoritative and balanced, it will be standard work on Burma for the general reading public.
