Samoa Travel Information

Samoa Flag SmThe Independent State of Samoa, usually just called Samoa, is an island country in the South Pacific. The country governs the western part of the Samoan islands, and until recently was known as "Western Samoa", so as to differentiate it from American Samoa.

As of 2009, Samoa had an estimated population of 179,000. The capital, and only city on the islands, Apia, according to the 2006 census, has a population of 37,708.

The economy of Samoa is principally based around agriculture. Agriculture, employs about two thirds of the labor force and accounts for most of the country's exports, with coconut and coconut products as well as noni juice, being particularly significant. As well as agriculture, remittances from overseas and foreign aid are also very important. Tourism to Samoa has also been growing, aided by a large amount of capital investment, and now accounts for about a quarter of GDP.

    Product Description:
Considered shocking when it was first published in 1928, Coming of Age in Samoa became the first book in the field of anthropology to capture the imagination of the general public. And for the ingenious young author, Margaret Mead, it marked the beginning of her long career as one of the most innovative thinkers – and remarkable women – of our time. For her landmark study the 23-year-old Dr. Mead had set out to determine whether the stress experienced by most children is a “natural” result of growing up. She traveled alone to the then unspoiled island of Samoa, living among the youth to compare their culture to our own. To truly understand a different culture she would remind us, every word, grunt, stomach ache, change of apparel, snatch of song is …. relevant.
