Samoa Travel Information

Samoa Flag SmThe Independent State of Samoa, usually just called Samoa, is an island country in the South Pacific. The country governs the western part of the Samoan islands, and until recently was known as "Western Samoa", so as to differentiate it from American Samoa.

As of 2009, Samoa had an estimated population of 179,000. The capital, and only city on the islands, Apia, according to the 2006 census, has a population of 37,708.

The economy of Samoa is principally based around agriculture. Agriculture, employs about two thirds of the labor force and accounts for most of the country's exports, with coconut and coconut products as well as noni juice, being particularly significant. As well as agriculture, remittances from overseas and foreign aid are also very important. Tourism to Samoa has also been growing, aided by a large amount of capital investment, and now accounts for about a quarter of GDP.

History of Samoa, Settlement of Samoans, Culture and tradition, Introduction to the history of Samoa: The following discussion focuses on Samoa since European contact. For additional treatment in a regional context, see Pacific Islands, history of. Early period Polynesians traveling in outrigger canoes arrived in the Samoan archipelago about 1000 bc, as indicated by Lapita pottery shards found in Mulifanua Lagoon on Upolu. Characteristics of the Samoan language indicate that the settlers probably came from Tonga. Local pottery manufacturing ceased by about ad 200, by which time Samoa had become central too much of the settlement of eastern Polynesia.
